Ink vs LCD

Since my mom's passing, I have made an effort to be in more regular contact with our family "back home". (I find it so interesting that my mom lived over half her life in the same house in San Francisco, but Iowa was still refered to as "home").   I don't know what this will mean in the future.  But the first step was a trip in July.  I saw both my mom's side and my dad's side and at some point, I hope to go through the notes that made during that trip and write out some of the stories and memories.  Since then, I've made a few phone calls, wrote out a few cards, and recently I've begun writing letters.

It's the card writing that led to the letters.  I started sending cards to people from my mom's, giving them a little update, sending a picture, or just making some sort of contact.  Not everyone has a long distance plan, it's nice to get something in the mail besides a bill, and I enjoy writing (with a pen).  The process of handwriting out cards reminded me how much I like to do that, not just the color of the ink, the weight of the pen, the texture of the paper and how it absorbs and then displays the ink.  But I find that before committing the ink to the page, I am more likely to ponder and while typing out a long not on my computer is more efficient, handwriting out a note is more contemplative.  That doesn' have to be the case now does it?  I think the "contemplative" aspect might be part of what I need in my life now.  So here I am, back at my blog.

Well, it sounds like the household is starting to awake.  So, it will be another time before we see where this leads.

  1. the handwritten letter definitely has a realness-feel to it. a diminishing craft perhaps. now i'm contemplating contemplation.
