Hilo Bay Cafe

This afternoon we tortured ourselves with a trip to Ross Dress for Less and spotted a sign for a noodle house up a ways in the mall (Prince Kuhio - Hilo). So afterwards, we wandered up, took a look at the food court and the restaurants in between and decided to stop at the Hilo Bay Cafe. It was in between lunch and dinner; both menus looked pretty interesting, but the "afternoon menu" was available with several things that caught our fancy. Scrunch tried a green salad and I had the poke; both of which were excellent and left room for dessert. The Ahi Poke was lightly dressed in seasame oil, fresh onion and spices, leaving room for plenty of ahi flavor.

My molten lava chocolate cake was delicious and served with Kona Coffee Ice cream (but you know me, I had to request the Tahittian Vanilla Ice cream instead) and Scrunch enjoyed green salad with sliced palm hearts and creamy garlic dressing. Three scoops of the Lychee Nut Sorbet was more than enough, but very refreshing.

This place is not cheap, but quite delicious and with excellent service, even as they are busy making the transition from lunch to dinner. It was a little startling when the lights went off, but then I realized somehow without me noticing, they had slipped a little frosted glass candle holder onto the table which was now glowing warmly.

Lest I forget, they had two lemonades available; a sparkling organic lemonade and a fresh squeezed. The fresh squeezed was great. The waitress got a good tip for a few very nice touches: two straws arrived in the lemonade, the dessert arrived with Kona Coffee Ice cream instead of vanilla, so she brought a vanilla on the side, and she remembered that the molten chocolate cake caught my eye when I first looked at the menu.
